Fatal House Fire
Wingate Rd March, 2 2012
DAGSBORO, Del. - Investigators are trying to determine what caused a deadly fire in Sussex County Thursday.

Flames destroyed a one-story home on Wingate Road near Dagsboro around 9:30 a.m. Multiple fire companies spent about two hours extinguishing the fire, according to first responders.

One man died inside the home, said Asst. State Fire Marshal Michael Chionchio. No one else was inside at the time.

"When we arrived the main part of the house had heavy fire venting out a picture window and our crews advanced two hose lines into the residence, while the crew from Millville began a search for the subject," said Chad Hudson, Captain with the Dagsboro Fire Department.

"Crews arrived on the scene six minutes after being dispatched," Hudson said.

"I think he was a great guy," neighbor John Reynolds said in describing the victim. "I don't think you could ask for anybody better."

The Chief Medical Examiner's office has not officially released the victim's name or cause of death. Family members were visibly upset standing outside the home.

"I'm sorry to see him go because I'll miss him," said Reynolds.

Firefighters said they arrived at the scene to find heavy fire and smoke coming out of the roof.

"Due to the older frame construction, we were able to send people inside and do an aggressive attack, which helped us get it under control quicker," said Matthew Gajdos, fire recorder with the Dagsboro Fire Department.

Fire investigators walked through the burned house looking for answers. Chionchio did not say what caused the fire or where it started.
